In 2011, a message of anti-arts funding gripped the Kansas City region. We believed the lies; that the arts are a luxury, only to be funded by the wealthy. However, the arts couldn’t survive and quickly began to disappear, close up shop, or worst of all – move to St. Louis!
Without the arts, Kansas Citians were feeling uninspired and local businesses lost their creative edge. Without the innovation that makes our economy strong, we couldn’t compete in a global market and businesses started to leave town. As the arts went, so did tourism, job creation, new residents and all the tax dollars they bring to support a vibrant and healthy community. Kansas City had become the city without art.
Alright, so this is slightly dramatic. But the arts are vital to our growth, development and sustainability as a region and we ALL have a vested interest in maintaining their strength.
If everyone in the metropolitan area donated $1 to the ArtsKC Fund each year, we would raise $2 million annually to support artists, arts organizations and arts programs.
